E-merchants have long taken advantage of the efficiency of services such as PayPal to help them turn casual surfers into shoppers. But by adding more than one online payment option to their Websites, companies can convert one-time visitors into repeat customers. This means doing a little bit of homework to get the right combination of payment methods that suit your business needs.
"If you're willing to do the research, finding online payment options isn't a technical task anymore," says Joe Thompson, 28, a computer software specialist. Thompson launched his online payment services company, Thompson Merchant Services Inc. (www.thompsonmerchant.com) in December 2002 after a short stint as an applications engineer at GO Software, (a company now owned by electronic payment technology giant VeriFone).
Former would-be boomtown may get second chance
Georges of today is an abridged version. Straddled by the giant iron bridge that divided and conquered it, St. Georges has the distinct feel of a chapter torn from a larger book and left with its faded pages fluttering in the wind. To truly see the town of St. Georges is to see what a difference one fateful day makes. There was a time, not too terribly long ago, when St. Georges was a boomtown. In those days, Du Pont Highway carried traffic through the town instead of over it. A lift bridge connected the canal's north and south banks, and the town prospered. "They say you couldn't even back your car out of the driveway in summertime because of the traffic," said Erik Dressler, past president of the St. Georges Civic Association. In that chapter in town history, there were nine gas stations and two hotels in town.
